Several decades ago, a gentleman named General Hendrik Schoeman was the proprietor of a farm known as Hartbeespoort. He conceived the idea of constructing a reservoir that would benefit the local community, although he could not have foreseen the challenges that lay ahead.
In 1896, construction of the dam wall commenced along the Crocodile River, close to the present-day railway line leading to Meerhof. This ambitious project resulted in the creation of the largest dam in the southern hemisphere.
